QUB Team Boomerang 2024

Team Boomerang to Represent SMAE at IMechE UAS Challenge 2024

Our Stage 3 Aerospace Engineers have recently completed their Aircraft Design module. Working in teams since last October, they were required to design, build and fly an autonomous, fixed wing aircraft with a maximum take off weight of 10kg. Team Boomerang were selected to represent Queens at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers UAS Challenge which takes place at BMFA headquarters in Buckminster, England from the 1st to the 4th of July 2024. They have developed a twin boom, inverted V tail design with novel features including their undercarriage suspension and payload ejection systems. Recent flight tests were successfully completed at the North Down Model Aircraft Club in Kirkistown (see photos). Thanks to the club for hosting and thanks in particular to Keith Malcomson for piloting for us again this year. The team is currently ramping up their flight tests and preparing for their trip to England with the support of our Engineering team in the SMAE Prototyping Lab and main Workshop. Good luck to all concerned and lets hope that the Boomerang really does come back!

Eric Lindsay, NDMAC Founder Member

Eric Lindsay, 1940 - 2024Eric Lindsay. 1940 - 2024

It is with great sadness that we note the death of Eric Lindsay on 8th April this year
Eric was one of the founder members of our Club, originally called the North Down Model Club.
The first AGM was held on the 8th January 1974 and Eric was a member of the organising committee.
Throughout the years since then, he has given his support, always willing to give advice and help to the members.
Something that our newer members may not be aware of is that Eric built his own pulse jet.  This was mounted on a bench at the flying site and with some trepidation it was fired up. Yes it did work successfully.
He was always willing to try something new.
In his latter years, due to ill health Eric was not as active as he would have liked but still managed to attend our AGMs whenever possible.
We pass on our commiserations to Eric's wife Joan and the whole family circle.

2023 Awards

At the NDMAC Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 7th December 2023 two awards were presented to members.

The 2023 Man of the Year award went to David Brown. David is always happy and ready to help out at the club, whether that is helping with the maintenance of our flying field or helping other flyers.  Congratulations David.

The 2023 Most Promising Pilot award went to Kyle Malcomson. Since joining NDMAC, Kyle has progressed very well and now even performs aerobatic manoeuvers like Knife Edges and Four Point Rolls.  Congratulations Kyle.
